Pragmatism

"Grant an idea or belief to be true. what concrete difference will its being true make in anyone's actual life? How will the truth be realized? What experiences will be different from those which would obtain if the belief were false? What, in short, is the truth's cash-value in experiential terms?" – A famous saying made a century ago.

What is the principle behind this?

The principle is that the truth is directly related to your beliefs and nothing to do with reality. It is a concept of being rational. You will find this argument always – “true for me but not for you” “true for my culture but not for you” “true for my habits but not for yours” so on and so forth.

In this we have Science, Mind, Logic, Metaphysics, and Faith & Religion. For anyone, one of this will hold higher value than the other. In my case, it’s Mind, Logic & Science.

The rest 3 are so inter-related, that people who are too religious often say they do not believe in metaphysical activity but in reality they do very much and since it’s a phenomenon not explainable by science challenging that itself is a sensitive issue.

I do a calculation for everything in my life, +1 is for something which has a positive addition to my life, -1 for anything that brings negativity or holds you back & 0 for neutral influence. If the answer is “+” you know you are on the right track.

I like to call this calculative decision making… something I learnt from Andrew Grove. If you think I am crazy, you should read his personal diary!

When I started this, I always wondered how things would turn up, I would be completely unemotional… hard hitting… inhumane to the core. I have a problem with everyone I know, they say things like ‘he doesn’t understand anything’ ‘he isn’t the person suited', not something you want to hear.

The way I ‘see’ the situation is different from the way it’s been perceived by the individual complaining. I am not a complainer, I hate bitching about anything because it’s not in my control so I am not bothered. I control what I can, which is my reaction, my emotions, my fear, my thinking… everything which is controllable by my mind.

I believe in Pragmatism, I use it to decide on the values & principles I have for my life. All the choices I have made till now are because I am a Pragmatist and they are unbreakable.
