finding the real you...

over the past few months, i was on a reading rampage. the likes of malcolm gladwell to prahalad and many more business school publications. but from my readings, there was only one book which stood out and that was - start with why by simon sinek.

it was captivating for one simple reason - my paradigm. for long as i can remember, i have always done things in the form of what -> how, i never bothered to ask myself 'why'. i even advised my family & friends to  - buy what you need, not what you want. i never bothered to ask them - why do you need it in the first place?!

'why' is a very difficult question to answer, so its no surprise that i never answered it in any of the decisions that i made so far in my life. i always focused on 'what' and 'how'.

the book guides you to 'why'. from what -> how.... i am gradually changing my view in terms of why -> how -> what (you can check out the book's website: www.startwithwhy.com to find out more)... the author simon sinek calls this the golden circle. a simple but world changing idea that can have a great influence on everything that we do. though the book uses examples like apple, martin luther king and the wright brothers. it's inspiring to know people who have nothing could achieve what they believed in just because their cause started with 'why'.

i started to ask myself many questions in every area of my life: personal, career and more importantly how i interact with people (something which i am not really good at). being an introvert, the normal reaction i get from people i know is that i am 'weird' or 'out of sync' but what really happened was that i was unfortunate to people and hang out with folks i shouldn't be with in the first place. if i had asked 'why' here, it would simply be pass time. not a very effective answer is it?

another important aspect of my life where i asked the question: why do i procrastinate? when i looked deep inside me, the answer was simple... i never had a purpose. why should i get up from bed in the morning? why should i work with this company? why am i living the way i live? the answer kept coming back to the same thing... i never had a purpose.

my life was based on what others thought was important. it was with who won & who lost. but there are no winners or losers in this world, its just what you consider to be important and not what other people think its important. you can consider peace of mind or money as the most important thing in your life... when you sync it with what you believe in - you've won!

many things in life opens yourself to new possibilities... finding the real you is always the hardest... so this change in paradigm has given me a new purpose to work on, something i can strongly believe in and focus all my energy into that one goal that i have for my life. i have started my life with - why!
